Still, Peachum exerts his influence and eventually gets Macheath arrested and sentenced to hang. Trapped, Brown agrees to arrest his friend. Even if we do not accept this sweeping statement, it is at least possible that there is an element of frustration and irritation in socialist writings.
Bertolt Brecht's play The Threepenny Opera was his most financially successful play and the work with which he is most closely identified. While it is regarded in modern drama as a significant political work, it is equally revered for its unique music and darkly engaging characters. Threepenny Novel is similarly set in this rather grim world, in which there are no greatly sympathetic characters, and society is just a matter of powerful people dishonestly competing with one another and exploiting those beneath them.
The cast then sings the Finale, which ends with a plea that wrongdoing not be punished too harshly. So while the texts of the "Threepenny Opera" are clearly written with this goal in mind, the reason why it became and has stayed so immensely popular is the accessible and rousing music - the combination of societal criticism and musical extravaganza was fresh and exciting when the musical drama it's not really an opera was first staged in Berlin in A young man comes in and asks for a job.
Peachum then arrives and drags Polly away. The seemingly endless business machinations of MacHeath and Peachum go on for far too long to hold our interest--even if they are minutely described from all points of view in order to show us that no character ever understands another character's reasons for doing anything that they do.

Threepenny Novel is a readable enough book, but it suffers from its obsession with the minutiae of criminal activity and intrigue at the expense of a more engaging story.
